Trim-歴史

Ireland =TRIM=
ボイン川岸辺沿いの遺跡の町トリム。
トリムの歴史は、アイルランドに進出したノルマン人から始まる。

トリムはいろいろな娯楽が盛んだったようである。
[Pasttime,Sports and Play]
An area of Trim called Passtime Place commemorates a thriving town
and community that allows time for recreation.
Here the "Mayor of the Bullring" was elected.
The location of this place is unknown, but may be associated with the Passtime Bush on Newhaggard Lane.
Bull baiting was a popular and bloody form of entertainmant when dogs were set upon a tethered bull.
In another less cruel form, a brave participant would hook a ring to the horn of the bull.
In late spring, after the fields had been sown and the meadows were not ready to be cut,
the fields and woods could be enjoyed for a short while.
Children played ball games and a stick and ball game, a forerunner of hurling.
They also enjoyed imitating the jousting and other tournament games
of the garrison in the castle.Gentler sports like skittles
and bowling could be enjoyed by young men and women.

Reliegious holidays and saint' days were celebrated with dramas
and pageants in the town and in the fields. The residents of Trim would
have walked in procession along
the road to the Cathedral in Newtown.

[Music and Board Games]
Leisure and rest for the families of farmers and tradesmen were rare
and precious.Story-telling,poetry,muisic and song passed the dark evenings.
The discovery of whistles, tuning keys and the mouthpieces of pipes
is testament to the importance of music in the festivals and
in the homes of the people of Trim.
The gaming pieces for board games have been found in the castle.
These strategy games were forms of draughts, chess, and backgammon.
Games of chance were also played,as dice made of antler and exotic walrus rusk
have been found in excavations.
Card games appear in the 16th century and were seen as a malevolent
activity associated with gambling and stories of the appearance of the devil.
On market days, visiting rogues would take advantage of the traders and their customers with games of dice and card tricks.
