Trim - Trim Castle/Yellow Steeple

-Trim Castle-
トリム城は、典型的NORMAN CASTLE。
NORMAN CASTLEには２種類あるが、トリム城は土と木で作られたMotte and Baileyの形をしている。

Hugh de Lacyが最初にMotteを造り、
1173年トリムの城がRoderick O'Connorの手に落ち破壊される
1175年から城が復興され、
1220年、現在のキープが立てられ始め、
1224年頃、ジョン王によって完成された。
北西のゲートハウス、南にはバービカンゲートがある。


[The Barbican Gate]
Early in the 13th century the weirs were completed on the Boyne,
allowing the moat to be flooded, and the Leper River was channelled along
the south curtain wall.
A new gate was constructed guarding the southern approaches to the castle.
This gatehouse ,of a rare design,was built as a single cyylindrical tower with
a barbican-defences of a forward tower and bridge.
An elaborate system of lifting bridges,gates,and overhead traps gave the garrison great
control over those entering the castle.
The arrangement of plunging loops demonstrates the building archers.
By the middle of the 13th century,the design of castle gate was
further developed and a twin-tower gatehouse with a passage between
the two towers became the standard.


-Yellow Steeple-
イエロー・スティープルは夕日に反射して輝いてみえることに由来。
12世紀、アウグスティヌス派の修道院として建てられた。
ボイン川を挟んで建っている。
